Our checking advice
If only JPEG is found, check the slot assignment and look on the Slot 1 card for the matching NEF before converting files or assuming it was lost. Copy each card into a separate folder and compare model and capture time to identify pairs. Do not add readings from paired files or backup copies. Our samples do not separately validate dual-card modes; file placement does not guarantee a readable counter.
Support boundary

- Confirm that the target camera created the file.
- Try the RAW original and check that EXIF and MakerNotes remain intact.
- Check the applicable camera limitations; a missing count does not mean the camera is unused.
Used-camera checklist
- Match the model and body serial number to the camera being sold.
- Treat the count as one clue alongside sensor, shutter curtain, ports, repair history and a real shooting test.
