How shutter-count reading works

EXIF & MakerNotes

• The server decodes EXIF and MakerNotes with ExifTool, then selects candidate count fields by brand. Missing or unrecognized brands use a generic candidate order, with explicit limitations for specific known-unsupported models; not every model has a separate parsing rule.
• Results retain the source field and distinguish mechanical, electronic, total and ImageCount values. Counters with different meanings are not automatically added together.
• When no dependable field exists, the result says that no count was found instead of returning a false zero. Filenames, folder numbers and ordinary image sequences are never relabeled as mechanical actuations.

Understand the count fields

Mechanical shutter count, total shutter count and ImageCount are not interchangeable. Pocket Shutter shows the source field and confidence; ImageCount is a usage clue, not automatic proof of mechanical actuations.

If no count appears

• Confirm that the target camera created the file.
• Try the RAW original and check that EXIF and MakerNotes remain intact.
• Check the applicable camera limitations; a missing count does not mean the camera is unused.
